Helps for the New Total Church Missions Leaders
By Evelyn Blount
Help, I am a new leader with churchwide responsibilities! What do I do? Beginning in September, Woman’s Missionary Union is suggesting five churchwide missions leaders instead of the one churchwide missions coordinator.
Society or Cooperative By Evelyn Blount Executive Director-Treasurer South Carolina WMU
What is the difference in a society and a group that works together cooperatively? For Southern Baptists, it has been the difference in operating on the verge of bankruptcy and of giving money to the project or missionary that does the best job of telling the story. Or, operating on a financially sound basis and funding the greatest needs. The first is the societal approach. The second is the cooperative approach.
More and more you hear of requests to fund a specific project or person and huge offerings resulting. People say, I like to give directly. It makes me feel good. Or, they say, I can wrap my mind around this. The danger, as I see it, is that we are not teaching children and even the adults of the concept of giving cooperatively to better do the work of God. A second danger is that through this approach, called society, the greatest need may go unmet. With the society approach whoever gets there first, gets the money.
Through the Cooperative Program*, money is distributed based on need, not heart appeal.
Since Baptists have given through the Cooperative Program, there has been no more threat of bankruptcy and Southern Baptists have developed the greatest evangelical mission enterprise in history. Further, we have looked after children, senior adults, and Christian education. Indeed, many more things occur every day because of giving through the Cooperative Program.
In my opinion, we are moving closer to becoming a society again. As I see it, cooperation—giving through the Cooperative Program—is the better, God-given way.

Sixty-Seven Serve in Jamaica During July 2007
Sixty-seven individuals participated in missions trips to the country of Jamaica during the month of July. They served through the South Carolina WMU, WMU, SBC, and Jamaica Baptist Women's Federation Partnership. Many of them have shared that they are not the same as when they left for the trip.
Judy Atkins, a member of the South Carolina WMU team, served in Kingston, Jamaica during July 14-21, 2007. She shares, "I listen to the children singing everyday (on my CD). My heart is still in Jamaica with all of the precious children and adults."
Kimberly Sowell, Second Baptist Church, Lancaster, was the trip leader for the team that served in St. Ann Parish in the Montego Bay area during July 14-21. She shares this about her team's experience, "We met countless men, women, youth, and children whose hearts God had prepared for gospel seeds. People hunted us down asking for Bibles. People were asking us specific questions about the gospel. We had God-ordained encounters at times that were “planned,” and at times that we were pleasantly surprised at God’s hand at work. God was faithful, and that was our greatest blessing. I must also say that we truly fell in love with the people."
IIf you have additional questions about the partnership, please contact sandratapp@scbaptist.org.

WorldCraftsSM is a WMU nonprofit ministry that imports handcrafts from around the world and markets them in the USA. Most items are made by men and women living in poverty; the income from these crafts helps them better provide for their families through their skills. WorldCrafts items are fairly traded items, which means they are produced in nonexploitative conditions by artisans who are paid a fair wage. Watch for new materials which will assist you in promoting this growing missions support ministry. For more information, visit WorldCraftsVillage.com.
