Real Freedom in Christ
1 Corinthians 9:19-23
Teen girls and their leaders from North Carolina and South Carolina gathered at First Baptist Church, North Myrtle Beach on October 21-23, 2016. These Carolina girls and their leaders came for inspiration, fellowship, snapshots and conferences as well as to hear missionary stories and how to live missionally every day. Featured missionaries were Anissa & Eric Haney who serve with the IMB in Sweden; Andrew Mann, NAMB missionary and pastor at Graffiti 2 Baptist Church in the South Bronx, New York; and Samantha Sammis serving in Charleston, SC. Each of these missionaries shared about real freedom in Christ and how God calls each of us to this freedom.
North Carolina panelists and a South Carolina Acteens group shared their gifts by presenting the theme interpretation for 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 and praying for the missionaries on the prayer calendar. Kym Mitchell, WMU Mag Editor and Student Consultant, shared about her experiences with missions, leading a snapshot and a conference as well as interacting with the teens.
The worship and music were filled with the wonder and awe of God as Anissa & Eric led this time of praise by sharing their exceptional musical talent. Andrew Mann shared how a medical diagnosis gave him unexpected joy and how God walked with him through this journey.
One way that the participants lived missionally was by participating and interacting in mission projects that were set up by Todd Wood, IMPACT Ministries. The mission projects allowed participants to go to retirement homes where manicures were given as well as playing games with residents; others went to the beach to interact with others by playing with Frisbees and giving them out; others handed out cookies to hotel workers; others interacted with people at the piers as well as prayer walking. A scavenger hunt was a fun way for groups to connect with each other and four groups did everything on the list and were rewarded with a dozen donuts! Saturday worship highlighted the way that God worked in the lives of the groups and the people with whom they took the time to engage. The weekend concluded with members from North Myrtle Beach First Baptist joining us in our closing worship. What a wonderful weekend that helped each of us to examine our real freedom in Christ.
One of the groups shared about the weekend with this testimony: “We weren’t quite sure what to expect during our weekend at Carolina Girls since our Acteens group had never attended before. What a joyful weekend it was for all of us! Our group loved getting to bond with each other and meeting other girls their age. We especially loved hearing from the Haney’s and from Andrew Mann. Each of us, Acteens and leaders, were challenged by the message and breakout sessions. It was great to get out of our comfort zones during the Frisbee Toss mission project and share some of Christ’s love with those we met. We had a blast and can’t wait for the next Carolina Girls!!!”
